E is for Excavation

Excavations

Somewhere, on the other
side of the planet,
they discover lost cities
on the silk route to China.
Somewhere they recover
the tomb of a pharaoh
dead four thousand years.

From my back porch, I
find that the rain
has stopped and that the lilacs,
which have burst suddenly
into bloom, fill the air
with the taste of purple.
The grass peculates green
and the dandelions sing,
yellow as little suns.

Somewhere, they unwrap
an Incan mummy and unravel
the mysteries of Atlantis.
I dig into the newly opened sky,
uncovering the archeology of clouds.
