The Insecure Writer: Has Anybody Seen my Funny?

So, I’m forty thousand words into my latest romantic comedy, Searching for Superman, and I’ve got a bad case of not very funny. Romantic comedy is supposed to be funny.
I don’t know why, but Searching for Superman keeps wandering from the banana-peel strewn path. I’ve thrown everything I’ve got at it. Right now, I’ve got a wrecking ball poised to take down the old theater that is the book’s primary setting. A wrecking ball is poised to punch a hole into the wall of the Rialto! I need a funny way out of the wrecking ball dilemma. I can’t seem to find it. And, if I don’t find it, the theater will be torn down and Stephanie the MC will be out of a job as will Conrad, the theater manager and Stephanie’s boss. It’s a terrible situation and I need my funny back to solve it.
If you see my funny, please tell it to come home.  Tell it I’ll give it anything it wants. I’ll make it cocoa with those little marshmallows floating on top. I’ll let it snowboard from the roof, even though I think it’s a dangerous thing to do.  Tell it I miss it. Just please, tell it  come home.

  1. Ohh, I don't think your funny left you:) What if the chain breaks and the wrecking ball drops on a parking lot. That should find your characters some time.

How to make that funny - I have no clue. All I keep seeing is a commercial that has a huge fluffy pink bunny instead of the wrecking ball and I can't remember what the commercial was for. Would a fluffy pink bunny work for your story?

  2. Oooh Thanks Marta! The broken chain idea is brilliant! Can I call you if I get stuck again?? :)

  3. Must be hard to have to be funny yet still come up with a plausible storyline - I can do one or the other but rarely both together.

    2. I've found that humor is difficult to summon. It pops up when it feels like it. Maybe you are trying too hard. Just write and don't worry about being funny. The one liner's seem to flow better when we're relaxed. It will come. Best of luck.

  4. I laughed at your post so your funny must be lurking around somewhere! Just ignore it and act like you don't care - it will come crawling back begging you to put in back in your story. Hang in there - uh, not from that building though.
