Welcome to the Hot Summer Nights Blog Hop!
When I think of hot summer nights, I imagine a collage of images, sounds and smells made up of the memories of summer past. There are the fireworks in my town, where we go and sit in lawn chairs watching colors explode on air. And teenage summers spent at dances by the lake, the music loud while a thousand stars sparkled overhead. And another, earlier memory of the same lake when I was a little girl, my mother slathering me in suncreen, the water cool and inviting on a hot day. There is the ocean beach, with a kaleidoscope of umbrellas and the smell of hot dogs and suntan oil mixing with the smell of ocean salt. And over there are the sunsets on Cape Cod Bay, my husband's arm draped over my shoulder as we watched the sun sink into water, the sky painted the most amazing shade of rose and lavender.
What's your favorite summer memory? Tell me about it in a comment here between May 22nd and May 29th for a chance to win a $10 Amazon card. Hot summer nights? I remember hot summer nights in the Guyana jungle that included scaly iguanas, mosquitoes, muddy toads the size of dessert plates and glimpses of long sinewy shapes, the fading light flashing off their gold and brown fur as they swung through the branches of our huge mango trees. Noises from the trees, howling and indescribable, made us stir uncomfortably as we sat under the palm thatched roof of our side porch. My mother's lit cigarette end, pulsing a red arc from her lips to the heavy crystal ashtray. The clink of ice cubes in my father's cocktail glass. The distant putt-putt of our gardener's idling motorcycle, as he let himself out of the compound for the evening.

My husband had never been camping before he met me. The first time we went to the mountains, a hurricane blew in. His only pair of shoes got soaked, and he tried to dry them by roasting them like hotdogs over the campfire. So funny!

This summer, for me, features two weddings and although I'm not married nor do I plan on getting married, it's always fun attending a summer wedding. There is something sweet about them that inspires the imagination to think happy thoughts.

There are so many good summer memories it's hard to pick just one! Let's see... One great summer memory that I can recall is going to the New Jersey shore, which was really cool being in the mountains of PA usually, with my cousin (I can't recall which beach exactly) who was a lifeguard. It was the first time I was left to my own devices. I was so excited but, being the nerd I was, the first thing I did was find a book store. At the time I was into Sweet Valley High books and found a new on that I hadn't found near home so I was thrilled! Next I went and got a big ol' container of boardwalk fries (or boardwalk awesomeness) and a big giant soda followed by a huge thing of fudge (hey I was a teen, calories stayed a way and I actually had a metabolism, unlike now). I sprawled out on a towel in the shade (I burn looking at the sun) and stayed there all day long. It was great!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway chance and I hope everyone has a wonderful day and a great summer.

My favorite summer memories are all about trips and love. In a hot summer night 3 years ago I met the man of my dreams. The scenario was perfect, there was french champagne and a paradise and exotic beach. It's hard to believe, but it was a dream come true.

My best summers were spent going camping with my Dad, just the two of us (and in a family that routinely had between six and thirteen kids, that was saying something). His special place to take us was waaaaay off the beaten path at a place we just called The Dunes. Not another car for miles. Stars so big and bright, you could see them reflected in the water down where we would fish. If the moon was full, the coyotes would come out and dance in their crazed way. In the daytime, you could see sidewinder tracks in the sand and sometimes the pawprints of some wandering dune cat. We would fish for hours and then go back to camp where he would read or play the guitar and I would cuddle up in a sandbank and play with the beetles that lived there. I loved those beetles--huge in my little-kid hand, all shiny-green-black-purple with itchy little legs and pinchy pinchers. I suppose there must have been other summer things we did back then, but I can remember none of it. Summers will only ever be three days, two nights, the moon and the sand and the beetles.

Hi! Sounds like a great book! One of my favorite summer nights was when my cousins, siblings and i camped outside, we stayed up all night, scaring each other, telling stories, playing board games, etc. We even stuck away to the park and played on the play ground for awhile. My parents were very, very strict. Getting away was so much fun and freeing! Its one of my favorite memories! Thank you for taking part in this awesome hop! Its so much fun! Its wonderful meeting and seeing so many great people! :)
